Repair or Replace? Signs It's Time for a New Fence

Cleared side passage with a new close board fence

Fences take a battering from wind, rain and whatever is growing against them. A few repairs can keep an old fence going, but there comes a point where patching it up costs more than it's worth.

Signs it's time for a new fence

  • Leaning or wobbly posts. Posts are what hold everything up. Once several are moving, the whole fence is on borrowed time.
  • Rot at the base. Timber that's soft or crumbling where it meets the ground won't hold fixings or stand up to the next storm.
  • Broken or missing boards and panels. Gaps mean pets can get out and the fence no longer does its job.
  • Repairs keep piling up. If you're fixing the same fence every year, replacing it is usually better value.
  • It's buried in growth. Brambles, ivy and overgrown hedges add weight, hold in moisture and hide damage.

Why clearing the boundary matters

Often the fence isn't the only problem. Overgrown side strips and boundaries make it hard to see what you're dealing with and impossible to put a new fence in properly.

On one recent job, an overgrown side strip next to a driveway was cleared, levelled and finished with a new fence line. Clearing first means the posts go in straight, the fence sits on a clean line, and the result looks right for years. You can see the before and after on our fencing page.

What happens to the old fence?

Old fence removal is part of the job. We take down the old fence, clear the boundary and prepare the ground before the new one goes in, so you're not left with a pile of old timber to deal with.

One contractor, start to finish

Because we do land clearance and fencing, you don't need to book separate trades to clear the boundary and then fence it. It's quicker, simpler and means one point of contact for the whole job.
