Agricultural and Stock Fencing: A Guide for Farmers and Landowners

Cleared field in Essex ready for agricultural fencing

Good fencing is one of the most important investments on a farm or smallholding. It keeps livestock where they should be, marks your boundaries and makes land easier to manage. Getting it right comes down to planning before the first post goes in.

What is the fence for?

The right fence depends on what it needs to do:

  • Livestock and stock fencing keeps animals in, so it needs to suit the type of stock you keep.
  • Agricultural boundary fencing marks the edge of your land and keeps people and animals out.
  • Post and rail is popular for paddocks and around yards, where you want a strong, tidy finish.

Tell us what you keep and what the fence needs to do, and we'll recommend the right option.

Clear the fence line first

Field boundaries are often overgrown with brambles, scrub and old hedging, with broken fencing buried underneath. Trying to fence through that rarely works well.

Clearing the fence line first gives you a straight, even run, makes it easier to put posts in properly, and gives better access along the boundary for maintenance later. It also means more usable grazing right up to the edge of the field.

Think about access and drainage

While you're planning, consider where gateways need to go for machinery and stock, and whether any ditches along the boundary need clearing. Wet, waterlogged ground along a fence line shortens the life of posts, so it's worth sorting drainage at the same time.

One contractor for the whole boundary

We clear land, clear ditches and install fencing, so we can take a field boundary from overgrown to fully fenced without you needing to coordinate different trades. That saves time and keeps the job moving.
